Albion R. Hodgdon Herbarium, University of New Hampshire

The NHA herbarium comprises approximately 200,000 specimens (120,000 vascular plants, 80,000 marine algae, and 550 bryophytes and lichens). The collection contains a combination of historic and recently collected specimens, including 97 nomenclatural type specimens and voucher specimens supporting taxonomic, ecological, and biogeographic research. While our specimens represent plant species worldwide, the collections emphasize northeastern North America and are especially strong in representing freshwater and marine habitats. An additional strength is our extensive collection of Neotropical aquatic species.

The Brown University Herbarium was founded in 1869 when the University acquired the collections of the Providence Franklin Society and Stephen Thayer Olney. The collection includes around 100,000 plant specimens and is an important depository of Rhode Island and New England collections. It is also rich in western and southern North American plants and includes special sets of historically valuable specimens from 19th and early 20th century western US expeditions. Among other important collections, the herbarium also includes a full set of Charles Wright’s Cuban plants (1856-1867) and a unique and classic collection of Carex. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Herbarium

The CMBG herbarium was initiated in 2014 to document and preserve the plant biodiversity of coastal Maine and surrounding regions, especially northern New England. The collection contains specimens dating from the 1840s through the present day. About 80% of the collections are from Maine; the remaining 20% represents collections from 24 other states and several Canadian provinces. Well represented collectors include Edward B. Chamberlain, Donald S. Cameron, Melissa Dow Cullina, Alison Dibble, Merritt L. Fernald, Albion R. Hodgdon, Norman C. Fassett and David Potter. Less numerous, but significant in their historical importance, are collections by Kate Furbish and Aaron Young.

Connecticut Botanical Society

The Connecticut Botanical Society Herbarium houses over 36,000 sheets of plants, and records the changing distribution of the Connecticut flora. The CBS Herbarium is housed in the same facility as the Yale University Herbarium.

The Connecticut Botanical Society is a group of amateur and professional botanists who share an interest in the plants and habitats of Connecticut and the surrounding region. The society was founded in 1903. Our goals are to increase knowledge of the state's flora, to accumulate a permanent botanical record, and to promote conservation and public awareness of the state's rich natural heritage.

An active collecting program adopted by both past and current faculty, staff and students in the University of Connecticut's Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB) has enriched the collections at CONN with a wealth of specimens from many world regions, which serve as a critical foundation for diverse scientific research activities. Notably, our specimen resources represent one of the most important research collections of native New England plants and include an excellent representation of the region's imperiled and invasive species. The CONN Herbarium, in conjunction with EEB, promotes the use of its collections as educational resources in plant biology.

Harvard University-HF

Harvard Forest Herbarium

The HF Herbarium contains over 3,400 specimens of just over 800 species collected locally over the last century (from 1908 to 2010). Many specimens were collected in the first half of the 20th century, primarily during three periods: 1908-1913 (~10% of specimens), 1928-34 (~35%), and 1947-49 (~45%). Specimens collected at HF but originally housed in regional herbaria (HUH, MASS) or personal collections are also now included. Modern flora was collected from 2004-2007 by Jerry Jenkins, Glenn Motzkin, and Kirsten Ward. Two digital databases, one describing the herbarium specimens, and the other describing the HF flora are publicly accessible. The database is now searchable on-line in addition to the digital downloads below.

New York State Museum-NYS

New York State Museum Herbarium

The vouchers for John Torrey's Flora of the State of New York (1843) formed the nucleus of the Herbarium. Because of the cultural and economic importance of the Albany-Troy area in the 19th century, the herbarium attracted collections of other early botanists, including material from Lewis Caleb Beck, Chester Dewey, H. P. Sartwell, Edward Tuckerman, Asa Gray, P. D. Kneiskern, among others. The herbarium also received important type specimens from M. A. Curtis, L. S. Rose, I. W. Clokey, C. F. Austin, B. D. Gilbert, C. S. Sheldon, E. Brainerd, C. S. Sargent, E. P. Bicknell, and H. M. Denslow. Throughout its history, the herbarium grew considerably from collections made by state botanists, Charles H. Peck, Homer D. House, Eugene C. Ogden, and Richard M. Mitchell and curators, Stanley J. Smith and Charles J. Sheviak.

Royal Botanical Gardens-HAM

Royal Botanical Gardens Herbarium

The Royal Botanical Gardens Herbarium (HAM) houses 62,000 accessioned vascular plant specimens from 191 families. After its founding in 1950, approximately 9,000 specimens were collected by Ecologist Aleksander Tamsalu over the course of a few years. The collection has a focus on the local floras of Burlington and Hamilton, Ontario, with approximately half of the collection from specifically within the Royal Botanical Gardens' Nature Sanctuaries and to a smaller degree, its cultivated areas. Notable specimens include nomenclatural standards of Syringa and type specimens of the Gentianaceae as described by Dr. James Pringle. HAM is the only Canadian herbarium to accept horticultural nomenclatural standards. HAM incorporated the herbarium of McMaster University, Hamilton College (MCM) in 1966. Other notable, historical collections include those of Christian Broun Ramsay, 9th Countess of Dalhousie, and of the Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art. HAM continues to accession an average of 385 specimens yearly.

The Gray Herbarium (Harvard University Herbaria)

The Gray Herbarium contains nearly 2,000,000 specimens and is worldwide in scope. Particular strengths lie in collections from all of North America, including Mexico and the West Indies. The collection contains holotypes, syntypes, Asa Gray photo and isotypes of species described by staff members such as Gray, Watson, Fernald, Johnston, Robinson, Smith, Weatherby, Rollins, and Tryon. Exchange between Gray and J. D. Hooker, the De Candolles and others resulted in the deposition in the Gray Herbarium of isotypes or syntypes of taxa from around the world described by Gray\'s European contemporaries. Many early or important individual collections are deposited in the Gray Herbarium. In recent years the New World representation in the Herbaria has grown through staff collections

Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History-YU

Yale University Herbarium, Yale Peabody Museum

Founded in 1864 by Daniel Cady Eaton from his personal library and plant collection, the Yale Herbarium is an internationally recognized repository with holdings of approximately 350,000 specimens from throughout the world. There are an estimated 5,000 type specimens. The collection is particularly rich in ferns, bryophytes and grasses, as well as in historically important materials from the early botanical collectors. In addition, it was the herbarium of record for the flora of southern New England from 1864 until 1955, when that function passed to the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
